A moderately circulated example of one of the most recognizable and excessive composition of the Nineteenth Century. This design features a full-length vignette like its $1 and $5 counterparts. Entitled Science Presenting Steam and Electricity to Industry and Commerce, a group of female allegorical figures account for an outsized presence that serves to focus the attention of the viewer amidst a veritable ocean of detail. Architectural and floral embellishments round out the balance of the composition and add a degree of complexity foreign to later designs such as the Series of 1899. Bold lifelike colors likewise pop against crisp paper that shows only mild evidence of circulation attested by a series of light folds. A stark blue and red overprint offers a degree of contrast against the variety of shades that compose the face vignette while the sharp greens of the back design do well to bring life to portraits of Robert Fulton and Samuel F.B. Morse in what amounts to an unusual composition even by the standards of the period owing to the dual portraits of two notable personalities. Indeed an excellent example to represent this popular design type and series without spending what might as well be a princes ransom for an example with a higher grade assigned.
