By far a distinctive and popular composition that has seen consistent demand from collectors. The Series of 1899 $2 Silver Certificate was a workhorse of commerce by the time this design fell by the wayside in the 1920s. Thousands of examples are known to the collectors of today with examples of every signature combination readily available and offered with frequency in numismatic circles. Yet most of those fall below the grade of Very Fine at the lowest ends of the grading spectrum. Few managed to survive at this grade level while retaining an uncommon level of eye appeal reflective of exceptional quality. Issued under the Napier - McClung signature combination that was current 1911 to 1912 this piece was assigned a grade of Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ by the likes of PMG and offers a remarkable sight. Anchored by a small portrait of George Washington flanked by Mechanics and Agriculture this composition somewhat unusual even by the standards of the period owing to almost medal-like arrangement where "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is seen inside a large rectangular arrangement above Washingtons portrait. The balance of the design although fairly typical of the period is still quite attractive and bound to be appreciated by the collector who has long sought an exceptional example of this design for themselves. From the Shores Collection Part I.
