New York, New York. Merchants Bank in the City of New York. 1860s $3. PMG Very Fine 25.G134a. A colorful $3 note dated Nov 1, 1862 from the Merchants Bank in the City of New York. This note appears to use a Lymans Protection scheme whereby a varying width between two segments of the note was employed to prevent alteration. Printed by the American Banknote Company, we can detect the note "Patent Applied For" printed vertically just to the lower left of the childs portrait at center, suggesting that this may have been ABNCo.s own protection effort. The red color remains vivid, the signatures are sharp and clear and the quality of the paper is excellent particularly given the VF 25 grade. A rare note that will certainly be a showpiece in any collection of Obsoletes.
