Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bank of the United States (3rd). 1840 $2000. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.Full frame lines and plentiful margins are found on this scarce $2000 note issued by the third Bank of the United States. An iconic American type and among only a tiny handful of Uncirculated specimens remaining, it employed the standard design layout with six portraits, three at each end, and the bank building at the top center. This example is payable to S. Mason at the branch in New York, but twelve months after the December 15, 1840 date. The note shows the usual back stampings of interest payments on the blank verso, the last one in 1850. A boldly printed and crisp note, with minimal show-through from the back stampings. Of roughly thirty sales tracked over the past two decades, only two others have achieved an Uncirculated grade.
