T-49. Confederate Currency. 1862 $100. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.Plate A. No. 3439. This was the first of three $100 Confederate types to prominently feature Lucy Pickens at center. Much is made over Pickens while the man at bottom right is largely ignored. He is George Wythe Randolph, a Confederate military officer who served as Confederate Secretary of War briefly in 1862. He was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson and is buried on the grounds of Monticello. This is a full margined and crisp $100 with well centered face and back prints. High grade examples of this note are infrequently seen, and while we can locate no recent auction records for 65s, we note that we sold a pair of PMG 64s in November 2016 for $1,057.50 each. PMG Pop 4/2 Finer. From the Mid-Continent Collection.
