1702 American Treasure Captured at Vigo Medal. By Georg Friedrich Nürnberger, Georg Hautsch and Martin Brunner of Nürnberg. Betts-94, MI III:17, Van Loon IV:360. White Metal. Extremely Fine, Edge Marks.47 mm. 40.37 grams. Appreciable semi-reflective qualities remain in the field areas on both sides of this intriguing piece. Wear is light, the design elements exhibiting a soft satin texture. Warm pewter gray patina overall, the surfaces reveal only trivial handling marks, while several more prominent disturbances are noted for the edge. While we have handled a number of silver impressions from these dies, this is our first offering for Betts-94 in white metal that we can recall. Indeed, the Betts reference refers only to silver strikings, which is also the only format offered in our (Stacks) Ford XIII Sale of January 2006. A find for the advanced collector specializing in this historic and challenging discipline.
