The United States Coin Company (Wayte Raymond). Catalogue of the Superb Collection of United States Coins Belonging to a Prominent American. May 19-21, 1915. New York. Very Fine.Octavo. Hardbound in dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on the front cover and spine, with blind stamped ornaments across the top and bottom of the covers. Pastedowns and flyleaves ornamented with a green floral motif. With all seven of the original photographic plates bound in, and an original prices realized list laid in. Named and priced throughout in pencil, with additional penciled annotations in places, including corrections to assigned grades and other minor notes. These are likely the work of S.H. Chapman, whose copy this was. It also includes a few bidding notes in red ink, as he was representing a client, W.B. Hale, in the sale. An important sale attributed to H.O. Granberg, though his name was not publicized by the firm at the time. Many choice pieces are included, and the sale was particularly strong in large cents that filled virtually all of the first three plates. The offering attracted bidders such as Newcomb, Wurtzbach, French, Ryder, and Beckwith among others listed on the first back endpaper in pencil. The most important rarities (through the modern lens) are the unique 1866 No Motto quarter, and the unique 1873-CC No Arrows dime, though the latter didn’t even rate space in the plates in 1915. One small tape repair to the front flyleaf. John J. Ford, Jr’s bookplate at the upper left of the front cover. Identified in ink as Chapman’s “private library” copy on the first endpaper, as well as having been acquired by T. James Clarke in April 1932. A handsome and historic copy filled with useful information for the researcher that realized $5,250 when it last sold in 2004.From the D. Brent Pogue Library. Earlier ex S.H.
