Cogan, Edward. Catalogue of a Very Celebrated and Valuable Collection of Gold, Silver and Copper Coins and Medals. The Property of Colonel M.I. Cohen, of Baltimore. October 25-29, 1875. By Bangs, Merwin & Co., New York. Very Fine.Octavo. Hardbound in contemporary tan half calf with marbled boards, pastedowns and flyleaves. Five bands divide the spine into six panels, the second, third and fourth with blue and dark green spine labels lettered in gilt. Inside the front cover will be found the label of the binder, C.W. Bryan & Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, a contemporary post-sale newspaper notice of the auction pasted at center, and John J. Ford, Jr.’s small bookplate at the upper left. Original blue paper covers bound in. Four fine photographic plates featuring numerous outstanding properties including the famous Cohen specimen of the 1804 silver dollar at the center of the first plate, now a highlight of the collection at the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum in Colorado Springs. Hand priced throughout with summations of each days’ realizations and a complete tally at the bottom of page 102. This appears after the final lot, number 2400, which was Cohen’s “Magnifying Glass with handle,” that realized $5, the same as an uncirculated 1802 quarter eagle on page 12.
The location of the bookbinder probably yields a clue as to who the original owner of this copy was. In the July 1875 edition of the American Journal of Numismatics, three subscribers were identified in Springfield, William Clogston, A.S. Bryant, and C.P. Nichols. An important 19th-century sale ranked “A” by John Adams and particularly desirable with the nice plates. From the D. Brent Pogue Library. Earlier ex John J. Ford, Jr., the Stacks-George Frederick Kolbe sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Library, Part I, June 2004, lot 379.
