Chapman, S.H. Catalog of the Magnificent Collection of the Gold, Silver and Copper Coins of the United States Formed by the Late David S. Wilson, Esq. March 13-14, 1907. Philadelphia. Nearly As Issued.Quarto. Hardbound in white half cloth and white boards, the latter lettered in gilt on the front cover. Ten original fine photographic plates. No prices realized, this having been mailed separately from this edition of the catalog and apparently never associated with it or lost over the years. Just a trace of gentle foxing is noted inside the covers, but interior pages are unaffected, bright, fresh and clean. Likewise, the plates are crisp and unmarred. The original bid sheet is laid in. Only a trace of trivial handling on the covers, but they are largely clean and bright, long protected by a glassine cover, which is now damaged on the back. The catalog itself, however, is unaffected.<p>The Wilson sale was the first conducted by S.H. Chapman after the dissolution of the Chapman brothers’ partnership in 1906, and it was among the more important of the 28 sales he would hold under his own name, establishing himself as a serious competitor to his brother who would start out slower but follow Wilson the same year with the magnificent Stickney sale. An exceptional example of this sale catalog, ranked “A” by John Adams. From the D. Brent Pogue Library. Earlier ex George Frederick Kolbe, June 2006, lot 19.
