Mehl, B. Max. Catalogue of the Extensive and Valuable James Ten Eyck Numismatic Collection of Rare Coins and Medals of the World. May 2, 1922. Fort Worth. Fine, or better.Octavo. Hardbound in modern brown half leather and brown cloth. Gilt lettering on the cover and spine. Mylar protector sheets bound in before and after the chipped original card covers. Six original plates, with one tiny corner loss to the last plate that does not affect the images. The interior is quite clean and solid otherwise. Probably hardbound at the request of D. Brent Pogue as this was a softbound copy when it appeared in Kolbe’s 1982 sale. Inscribed in blue ink, “donated to Chicago Coin Club / June 1957 / by Geo. F. Brown, No. 31.” Brown was vice-president of the Chicago Coin Club in 1922, the year of the Ten Eyck sale, and Charter member 31, one of an illustrious group of founders including such well-known names as William Forrester Dunham (#17), B. Max Mehl (#32), and Theophile E. Leon (#13). The Ten Eyck Collection was a sale loaded with important properties, highlighted by rarities such as the Linderman Specimen of the Class III 1804 silver dollar, and two Brasher doubloons, while Mehl himself pronounced the session of American colonial coins “undoubtedly the most important collection offered since the Parmelee sale in 1890.” Ranked as an “A+” sale by John Adams. From the D. Brent Pogue Library. Earlier ex George F. Brown to the Chicago Coin Club, June 1957; George Frederick Kolbe, June 1982, lot 1092.
