Mehl, B. Max. Catalog of the Famous and Complete Collection of United States Gold, Silver and Copper Coins formed by William Cutler Atwater. June 11, 1946. Fort Worth. Fine.Octavo. Hardbound in modern blue half calf and matching cloth, with original blue paper covers within. Lettered in gilt on the front board and spine. Some wear to the original paper covers, but the interior is quite clean and the binding tight. Probably bound at the request of D. Brent Pogue, as this volume was softbound in Kolbe’s 1982 sale. Prices realized not included. A nice and durable copy of this important Mehl sale, from which Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. famously acquired the Matthew Stickney specimen of the Class I 1804 silver dollar. Eliasberg made his first trip to Texas for this sale, intent on buying several coins, the most important among them (by his own ranking) being the 1804 dollar and the 1858 eagle. While Will Neil had attempted to give Mehl a “buy bid” for the 1804 dollar, and another prominent collector had all but demanded Mehl award the dollar to him in the sale, Eliasberg had secured an agreement of “first refusal,” perhaps simply by his presence during the closing of the sale. A few details of Eliasberg’s visit to Texas were documented in a file of correspondence between the two men pertaining to this sale, which we read, cataloged and sold in our September 2010 sale (lot 4123).From the D. Brent Pogue Library. Earlier ex George Frederick Kolbe, June 1982, lot 1097.
