1860 Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). This is an particularly important occasion, since the 1860 twenty dollar is anything but common in near-Mint State condition. This coin is a fully brilliant example with vivid and frosty peach-gold luster throughout. The abundant abrasions often found on Type One double eagles are virtually nonexistent, and the strike is nearly full. With the massive gold discoveries in California, erection and operation of the San Francisco Mint (1854) meant that less gold had to be transported to Philadelphia, thus lower mintages resulted.
