1863-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-58 (NGC). CAC. Lovely medium gold surfaces exhibit tinges of pale pinkish-rose as the coin dips into a light. Both sides are lustrous with a bold to sharp strike throughout. Popular for type purposes, the 1863-S is one of the more frequently encountered double eagles from the Civil War era, but only in circulated grades. The scarcity of Mint State survivors (our multiple offerings in this sale notwithstanding) places extreme collector pressure on premium quality Choice AUs, as here.
