1861 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS). At one time, the 1861 was the most common issue in the Type One Liberty double eagle series. Prior to discovery of the S.S. Republic and S.S. Central America treasures, nearly all dates in the series were rarities at the Mint State level. Today, several S-Mint issues are more prevalent than the 1861. The very subtle yellow-gold color of this piece is attractive, with a bold strike of the dies throughout, and natural deep patina on each side. This is a minimally abraded example for the conservative assigned grade.
