Undated (ca. 1872) Jefferson / Equal and Exact Justice for All Men medal. By J.A. Bolen. Silver. Thin Planchet. Musante JAB-26. MS-62 (PCGS). 25.4 mm. 10.2 grams. Attractive blue, violet and russet iridescence over prooflike deep silver gray surfaces. Struck on a thin planchet and likely one of the later restrikes by J.W. Kline as it contrasts sharply with the thick flan examples, though this is by no means certain as no records were kept pertaining to planchet weight or thickness by the makers. Still, very well made and a rarity in silver from Bolen’s original dies. Just two are believed to have been struck with simply a “?” given by Musante for the Kline restrikes. Any is rare in silver and this one is aesthetically very pleasing. From Donald M. Miller; Charles Litman; Q. David Bowers; our sale of January 2011, lot 6619.
