1864 J.A. Bolen Liberty Cap store card. Copper. 28 mm. Musante JAB-9. MS-65BN (NGC). Very attractive light golden brown copper with considerable original red remaining in the recesses and traces of pale blue, green and gold accenting the reflective fields. This is an impressive card for its finely rendered self-portrait of Bolen in nice relief, and the broad, thick rims that frame both sides. Slight softness at the centers and trivial specks on the reverse, but excellent quality and eye appeal overall. A superb provenance adds to the appeal. According to the American Journal of Numismatics, just 25 are believed to have been struck in copper. From the Donald M. Miller Collection; Charles Litman Collection; Q. David Bowers Collection, our sale of January 2011, lot 6601.
