New York, New York. 1868 New England Hotel and Dining Saloon. Bowers NY-6940. Gilt brass. 34 mm. Mint State.,Obverse: Liberty Head double eagle motif. Reverse: Advertisement in eight lines, NEW ENGLAND HOTEL / AND / DINING SALOON / BOWERY & / BAYARD ST. / NEW-YORK / 200 ROOMS / LODGINGS 50 & 60 CTs. Brilliant gilt surfaces with pleasing satiny luster. There are areas of missing gilding, some are on the high points but others have the appearance of a manufacturing imperfection, as made. The surfaces are so choice that it is all but impossible to imagine this piece seeing much handling.
The business was listed at 30 Bowery in the New York directories of 1868 and 1872. At the time the Bowery was still the entertainment and tourist center of New York City, with lots of hijinks and lowjinks in the offing. This is the Bowers plate piece.
,Ex B.
