New York, New York. 1867 Robinson, Lord & Co. Bowers NY-7340. Gilt brass. 38 mm. Choice Mint State.,Obverse: Liberty Head double eagle motif. Reverse: Heavy white card printed in black with advertisement in seven lines, ROBINSON, LORD & CO. / 158 / Chambers St. N.Y. / WHOLESALE / WOODEN WARE. / Lord & Robinson / BALTIMORE. Traces of lacquer are noted, but this likely served well in protecting the surface over a long period of years. As a result, the shell is brilliant and satiny gold with strong luster and excellent eye appeal. The card is likewise superb, and fully original. Clean off white surface with strong black ink and really no evidence of any handling at all. An outstanding card from the Bowers Collection and plated in his reference.
This firm is listed both as Robinson, Lord & Co., and Lord & Robinson. It was a Baltimore firm that made brooms, wooden ware, and other small items of wood, but it also operated in New York at 158 Chambers Street, the office this card was made to advertise. The Baltimore manufactory produced Excelsior brand matches beginning about 1869.
,Ex George Fuld; David Schenkman; Joseph Levine; G. Brandenberg, February 1986; Steve Tanenbaum, 2011; Q.
