New York, New York. 1867 Richards & Markt. Bowers NY-7280. Brass. 38 mm. Extremely Fine.,Obverse: Liberty Seated silver dollar motif. Reverse: Advertisement in eight lines, RICHARDS & MARKT / MANFS. / OF THE / SILVER DOLLAR / & $20. GOLD PIECE / BUSINESS / CARDS / 55 MURRAY St. N.Y. Deep golden olive brass surfaces are mostly uniform but for a bit of soft verdigris in places that likely could be removed with a little effort, even though the patina might be different underneath. Soft luster remains on both sides and there are no other imperfections worthy of mention.
According to the Bowers reference, where this piece is plated, the firm Richards and Markt seem to have been in business for only a short time. They were listed in the 1868 city directory at the address given on this card, but by 1872 Thomas C. Richards was listed as a hardware dealer at 47 Murray Street.
,Ex David Schenkman, February 1979; Steve Tanenbaum, 2011; Q. David Bowers Collection.,
