New York, New York. 1867 Perris & Browne. Bowers NY-7140. Silvered brass. 38 mm. Mint State.,Obverse: Liberty Seated silver dollar motif. Reverse: Heavy orange card printed in black with advertisement in nine lines, PERRIS & BROWNE, / 172 /FULTON ST. / NEW YORK, / PRINTERS / OF / Circulars, Billheads, / &c. &c. / ONLY MANUFACTURERS OF THESE CARDS. The obverse retains nearly full original silvering with only the slightest loss on the highest points. The card is bold orange with not loss and barely any evidence of handling at all. Superb eye appeal overall and a great rarity. According to the Bowers reference where this piece is plated, just three to five examples are known. It is hard to imagine a nicer example exists.
By 1872, the firm was reported as located at 164 Fulton street, tightening the window of this cards manufacture to just five years, beginning in 1867. However, as another card was produced with an 1868-dated obverse shell, it is quite possible that this variety was made only in 1867. Proprietors were William G. Perris and Henry G. Browne.
Here is another rare opportunity to acquire a shell card advertising the manufacturer thereof.
,Ex Q. David Bowers Collection.,
