1860 Abraham Lincoln. DeWitt-AL 1860-3. Copper. 41.5 mm. Choice MS-65 (NGC).,Glossy chocolate brown surfaces with faint traces of faded red in some of the most protected recesses. Sharp and beautifully preserved, with just a few minor marks scattered about. The original examples of this medal were issued for the inauguration, but the reverse die broke and was replaced. This features a replacement reverse die, and was likely struck a little later, though probably still in the 1860s. Aside from the missing die crack, the new reverse may be identified by the handle of the axe extending above the top fence rail. This one seems to be of a bit later die state, with some die sinking evident in the fields. Large, impressive, and nicely preserved. A Lincoln classic. John Ford did not have this medal in copper.,From the Brian Dobbins Collection of American Political Tokens. Earlier ex NASCA, June 1980, lot 763,
