1860 Abraham Lincoln. DeWitt-AL 1860-16. Brass. 38.2 mm. Choice MS-64 (NGC).,Beautiful pastel toning through the obverse fields, with lightly mottled orange, rose, blue and green over the olive brass surface. The reverse exhibits mostly light golden brown mottling over the brass. Strongly prooflike on both sides and nicely preserved with just a trace of patina break on the highest points. These dies were muled with the Washington Ugly Head medal, among others, and variations appeared in John McCoy’s collection, sold in 1864 by Woodward. It is likely that they were made for him. McCoy had one in copper, and it was noted in the catalog that just two had been struck in that metal. He also had one in brass, as here (with no mention of mintage) and one in tin. Other related mulings were noted as one struck for silver, two for copper, two for brass, and five for white metal. It is probable that the same is true for this muling, but Woodward simply omitted the comment. Either way, this is a great rarity in any composition and this example is quite pretty.
