(C. 1876) Washington / Jefferson Muling by J.A. Bolen. Tin. 25mm. Musante JAB M-9, GW-799; Baker-222. MS-63 (NGC).,Mostly brilliant and highly reflective surfaces. The obverse (Washington side) is flecked with tiny little pits, the result of a poorly prepared planchet and, as made. The reverse shows much less of this feature but has streaked dark patina. One small rim bump is noted. Bolen cut the dies in 1867 and is believed to have struck 5 examples in copper. The white metal examples, as here, were made by Kline after the dies were sold to him in 1872. Musante, in his recent work on Washington medals, dates them to the centennial celebration. As a class, these mulings are rare. Out of 15 identified variants listed my Musante, he commented that he had only seen six of them. From the Tim Gabriele Collection.
