(after 1864) Muling of J.A. Bolen’s Soldier’s Fair and He Lived For His Country dies. Copper. 28mm. Musante JAB W-3. MS-65 RB (NGC).,Deeply faded red copper on both sides with overtones of blue and soft green iridescence. Glittering prooflike fields and really no handling or spots worthy of specific mention. A lovely piece overall and there is no estimate of the number struck or whose undertaking they were for sure. The dies were sold to prominent collector, A. Ramsay McCoy, but neither the medals nor dies appeared in the sale of his collection in 1918. Musantes first record for a struck piece was in Woodwards 33rd sale, December 1880.From the Tim Gabriele Collection. Earlier ex Q. David Bowers.
