1819/8 Matron Head Cent. N-2. Rarity-1. MS-61 BN (PCGS).;Lovely light mahogany brown gives way to light olive-gold with steel mottling on the obverse. The reverse is beautiful light olive-brown with pale steel overtones and blushes of sky blue. Both sides exhibit nice luster. A very attractive cent with really only a single abrasion worthy of mention above the portrait and even that is nicely masked by the pleasant patina. Well struck and evenly so with full dentils all around though a bit of softness can be seen along the top of the hair and in some of the stars.<p>Struck from the dies in their earliest observed states. The overdate is sharp and under magnification the precise curvature of the 8 under the 9 can be discerned with ease. Mounding around this digit noted by Noyes under his (unseen) obverse State A is unmistakable on this piece, which was used as the plate coin for the die state in Noyes most recent edition. A choice and most delightful example of this popular overdate variety. Noyes Die State B/A.;Ex Tom Reynolds, 1994; our sale of the Twin Leaf Collection of United States Large Cents, Part II, March 2016, lot 10037.
