1851-D Liberty Half Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS).;The 1851-D half eagle is seldom offered with the quality and eye appeal of this Choice AU. The strike is characteristic of the issue, with softness of detail to the hair curls over Libertys brow and the high points of the eagle. Other features are quite sharp, however, and the overall appearance is quite lustrous with a frosty texture. Further adorned with bright golden yellow patina, this coin will please the discerning Southern gold specialist. Although a mintage of 62,710 pieces is generous for the issuing mint, the 1851-D is scarce and underrated in todays market. According to Southern gold expert Doug Winter (2003), this is the sixth rarest of 26 issues in the Dahlonega Mint five-dollar series. Far superior to the typically encountered survivor, the present example is highly recommended for inclusion in an advanced cabinet.;
