Essentially a mausoleum amidst an otherwise unremarkable graveyard full of tombstones. This example is by far one of the finest examples of its Friedberg Number at either PCGS Banknote or PMG. Burdened only with exceptional traits that are too numerous to count, this example is indeed a monument to eye appeal and one sure to distinguish itself at auction thanks to these very qualities that demonstrate how this piece managed to earn the grade it was assigned. From uncommon vibrancy demonstrated by the contrast endemic to the bi-colored Treasury overprint to the sharp crispiness of the corners and margins; this note has everything a collector could ever want from a specimen at this grade level. The portrait of Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks who had died a few months into his term is particularly lifelike and does well to demonstrate the abilities of Charles Schlecht who engraved numerous portraits of other political personalities during the period. Yet remarkable qualities are not solely confined to the face of this design. The verso by comparison offers much in the way of technical distinction and eye appeal. Complex and rich geometric lathework serves to focus the viewers attention to "UNITED STATES" displayed plainly at center while the guarantee and redemption clause may be seen along the left margin between a pair of denomination counters. A similar composition absent the guarantee and redemption clause may be seen at right along the right margin as well. No doubt a superior specimen compared to most. This example offers much in the way of opportunity for the collector seeking to complete their "graveyard" with examples of uncommon quality and eye appeal.
