A major conditional rarity for a popular design. This note represents a Friedberg Number that isnt "common" or "rare," but one where the design drives much in the way of interest. Featuring a portrait of Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks; the depiction of Hendricks isnt unusual in the fact it features a well-known politician who died while holding an elected position. Rather the odd shape of the portrait is what stands out compared to most compositions of the period. Similar to a tombstone found amidst the well-kept expanses of a graveyard, this depiction has led to the "Tombstone" moniker often used in association with this design. Collecting a complete "graveyard" is nonetheless a difficult prospect for the collector thanks to rare Friedberg Numbers like the Fr. 295 and Fr. 297. Yet that prospect is all the more daunting should one wish to collect the design with an emphasis on condition especially towards the highest ends of the grading spectrum. Most examples of this design regardless of Friedberg Number are in the range of Very Fine and below while a small handful of specimens are recorded around or above the range of About Uncirculated. Between a limited supply and demand that far outstrips that supply one must contend with a limited range of options and frequently levy strong bids should they wish to compose such a set. That trait is embodied by the note offered here to the letter as it is one of just two pieces known at this grade level per the PMG Population Report and should rightfully see a battle for ownership when it comes time to cross the auction block reflective of the rare nature of this opportunity.
