Representative of the first internment in the proverbial graveyard. The Rosecrans - Jordan signature was current from only 1885 to 1887 and accounts for a rare sight regardless of type and denomination. The brevity of this signature combination can be chalked up to the fact that Treasurer Conrad N. Jordan resigned his position in 1887 to become President of the Western National Bank of the City of New York (Charter# 3700). Jordans tenure further saw the introduction of various new designs that would later become staples of collector interest including the Tombstone. As for the relationship between this signature combination and design one would be remiss to overlooked the recorded population. Both Track & Price and the Gengerke Census record roughly 25 pieces with at least two held by long-term institutional collections such as the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Smithsonian. Very few have been offered at auction in recent years with this example representing a noted highlight when it was last offered in 2022 as part of our Winter 2022 Auction (Lot 20145) and realized $38,400. Its presence then was unusual and its presence now is even more unusual as opportunities like these are often years or even decades apart at best. Chances are such a brief interval will not be the case when this note is invariably offered again at some point down the line and well into the future. Bid accordingly should you hold any hope of acquiring this remarkable specimen for yourself or should you wish to build a set representative of this unusual design with an emphasis on uncommon quality and eye appeal.
