Representative of one of the most unusual albeit morbid nicknames in the expansive canon of paper money issued by the United States. The so-called "Tombstone" has been a perennial favorite of collectors and one with no shortage of options owing to the length of its issue that lingered into the 1910s under the Series of 1908. Yet should you wish to build a proverbial graveyard of this design type that features the oddly-shaped portrait of Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks who died mere months after his term began, this example reflects a difficult prospect for collectors looking to complete the set. Exceedingly rare by even the most objective of considerations. This Friedberg Number records a total of 16 survivors with a handful of scattered offerings over the past decade that each realized a respectable sum at auction. Exemplified by this example which last sold in November 2020 for $11,400, the nature of this specimen is remarkable and stands among the finest known. Assigned a grade of About Uncirculated 53 by the likes of PMG, this example shares much in the way with the one (B14167245) we sold in our August 2024 Global Showcase Auction for $16,800 (Lot 21202) in terms of both aesthetic and technical distinctions. Light handling typical of circulation is reflected in the grade given by PMG while much in the way of eye appeal is likewise retained despite some very minor and arguably immaterial fading seen with regards to the Treasury seal and helps underscore the nature of this opportunity which is bound to be a rare one for the collector seeking to represent a rare Friedberg Number in their own holdings.
