An EXTREMELY RARE and exceedingly desirable issue, this commemorative striking differs from the much more commonly encountered type (L&M-942) in that it features the plumed shako of the Hung-Hsien Emperor touching the rim at the top of the obverse. In addition to this key difference, the overall craftsmanship of the dies isn t nearly as refined as on the more common type. Kann does mention a variant (K-664A), which features " ...deviations in the design of decorations and stars on epaulettes " and " ...top of feathered hat varying in shape ," though the scant number of examples to have crossed the auction block presents too few in number to see any discernable variance in such design aspects. Regardless, an example that is very lightly handled and enticingly toned, with some glints of brilliance emerging from the protected areas.
