USD 200000 - 400000
CHINA. Gold Dollar Pattern, Year 12 (1923). Tientsin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62+. L&M-1096A; Fr-Unlisted; K-1575; WS-0070; Wenchao-45 (rarity: ★★★★). Small characters variety. An iconic Chinese RARITY from the earlier portion of the 20th century, this type is already difficult and wildly contested in its normal silver module, but becomes immensely lofty when encountered as a specimen striking in gold, as is the case here. With just two graded finer in the PCGS census, it s stunningly clear how impressive this pedigreed offering is. The strike is sharp and robust, with an enticing and rich golden-yellow nature to the coloring, and the luster seemingly drips from the mirrored surfaces. For the advanced collector of the vintage Chinese numismatics, off-metal strikings specifically, or exceptional, museum-quality gold coins more broadly, this pattern will undoubtedly entice and excite--the sum total of which should allow this specimen to soar. For comparison, the Pinnacle example, a PCGS Unc Details (Graffiti), realized a total of $204,000 in our April 2021 Hong Kong Auction (Lot # 50014). Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (not in previous sales).
