Variety with reeded edge and without legend at bottom of reverse. A VERY RARE and incredibly popular issue from earlier in the production, this specimen lacks the "commemorative coin" language below the pavilion along with the accompanying floral stops. The lower reverse field was left blank for engraving, though this aspect was quickly abandoned. Already difficult to encounter, it is that much more so in grades of Mint State without issue. Accordingly, this cataloger could locate just one other that meets this criteria to cross the auction block in the past three years--a PCGS SCECIMEN-63 that realized a total of $576,000 in December 2022. The example presented here, glistening and appealingly toned, offers enchanting eye appeal and a monumental opportunity for the connoisseurs seeking such a specimen. An incredibly popular and desirable type believed to have been a pattern issue, it now appears that these were, in fact, more medallic in nature, and meant to be given out upon the opening of the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), the facade of which is displayed upon the reverse. Initially designed with a blank field below the pavilion for the intended recipient s name to be engraved, the reverse was altered slightly to contain the characters "紀念幣" between two rosettes, as the engraving proved difficult on the initial batch.
