ANNAM. Heaven and Earth 2 Tien, ND (1841-47). Thieu Tri. PCGS MS-63.KM-268; Sch-251; Thierry-V166/V167 (different dies); Thierry Supplement-440 (different dies); T.Z.S.L.-pg. 284 # 64 (different dies). Weight: 7.78 gms. Obverse: Nhi Nghi, sun in clouds to left, moon in clouds to right; Reverse: Thieu Tri Thong Bao. Tied for second finest certified with four other examples on either the NGC or PCGS population reports, only one finer (PCGS MS-64). This beautifully preserved Choice Uncirculated survivor boasts bold well-formed design features with relatively smooth surfaces that exude originality. The fields display a pleasing dove gray coloration with a slight iridescent sheen the pops out when tilted in the light with hints of richer patina in the protected areas. Minor earthen deposits are noticed in the crevasses of the design elements adding to its original looking appearance and eye appeal. Clearly plucked from circulation early on, this charming little minor silver coin is sure to catch the attention of many who behold it and is worthy of a fine numismatic cabinet. The depiction of the sun and moon is said to represent equal parts of the two primary modes; positive and negative, male and female or heaven and earth. In Vietnamese they are referred to as Duong Nghi (Male) and Am Nghi (Female) or simply Am Duong which is same as the Chinese philosophical concept of Yin and Yang. From the Nguyen Dynasty Collection.
