ANNAM. 7 Tien, Year 13 (1832). Minh Mang. PCGS MS-61.KM-194; Sch-181; Thierry-Not listed; Thierry Supplement-Not listed; T.Z.S.L.-Not listed; Dav-111. Mintage: 20,000. Weight: 27.05 gms. Obverse: Dragon in clouds, date below; Reverse: Minh Mang Thong Bao. Tied for second finest certified of the date on either the NGC or PCGS population reports with two other examples only surpassed in the PCGS census by just one example. This alluring Mint State example offers a delightful gunmetal gray tone with some tinges of olive spread around the devices all complemented by a faint iridescent sheen. A stunning specimen worthy of an intense bid and interest to acquire an example of the first dated crown of the Asian continent. According to Thierry who cites Dai Nam Thuc Luc (DNTL), stating that minting for the first struck coins of Annam began on the 6th Moon of the 13th year (July 1833). Only two denominations were struck at this time, 7 Tien and 3 Tien, each featuring the iconic flying dragon within clouds in the name of Emperor Minh Mang. These were obviously struck in limited quantities with few surviving examples extent today. The 7 Tien were struck in 0.700 fine silver with a mintage of only 20,000 while the 3 Tien were struck in 0.780 fine gold with a mintage of only 1,000. Clearly the survival rate for these earlier issues is dismal when compared to the later undated types. They are especially difficult to obtain in such a high state of preservation and attractiveness. Serious consideration should be given by quality conscious collectors who are looking to acquire high grade pleasing examples to completement their numismatic holdings. From the Nguyen Dynasty Collection.
