ANNAM. 7 Tien, Year 14 (1833). Minh Mang. PCGS AU-58.KM-195; Sch-182; Thierry-V80/V81 (different dies); Thierry Supplement-402 (different dies); T.Z.S.L.-pg. 281#50 (different dies); Dav-111. Weight: 26.82 gms. Variety with large characters on reverse. Obverse: Dragon in clouds, date below; Reverse: Minh Mang Thong Bao. An enticing specimen in an elevated state of preservation, this near-Mint example sports mottled olive-gray tone and exhibits just the slightest degree of handling upon the higher points and exposed fields with much remaining luster in the protected areas. This handsome example offers a pleasing appearance with much originality that is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.According to Thierry again citing DNTL, states that minting for the second struck issues began on the 3rd moon of the 14th year (April 1833). He further states that some sources offer slightly conflicting information as to the alloy used to produce 5,000 Lang of silver, one stating 0.700 fine silver was used while another states the alloy was 0.748 fine silver. The alloy of 0.700 fine silver consisted of 1,200 Lang of copper, 300 Lang of Zinc and 3,500 of Silver to produce 5,000 Lang of silver. While the higher purity alloy consisted of 1,000 Lang of 8 parts copper and 2 parts zinc mixed with 4,000 Lang of silver Wenyin (0.935 fine silver) to produce 5,000 Lang of silver which would create an overall higher silver content of 0.748 fine silver. It wasnt until the 1st Moon of the 15th year (February 1834) that the alloy for silver was legally raised to 0.800 fine silver. From the Nguyen Dynasty Collection.
