1838-O Liberty Seated Dime. No Stars. Fortin-102. Rarity-3. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. Wisps of iridescent steel and champagne-gold blend with dominant pearl-gray patina on both sides of this bold Choice AU example. Much of the satin luster remains, and the surfaces are well preserved and pleasing. Eagerly sought in all grades, the 1838-O is typically offered in the VG to EF range. Writing for the website seateddimevarieties.com, Gerry Fortin states that the 1838-O is: "A difficult date in AU or better with few Mint State examples known." The offered dime is conditionally scarce and represents an important find for the advanced numismatist, especially given the historical and numismatic significance of the 1838-O. It is the first mintmarked dime in U.S. coinage and the only one of the No Stars Liberty Seated design type.
