Engraved Horse Racing Award Fashioned out of a Silver Dollar size coin. Looped for suspension. One side of the host coin is engraved with PRESENTED above a raised (HORSESHOE) (RIDING CROP) (1850s GOLD dollar coin) that were applied onto the coin surface, with the name MALANIN (?) engraved below. The riding crop and points on the horseshoe are done in gold with the horseshoe itself of silver. On the other side is engraved 1 MILE & 3/8 / IN / 2-18 3/4 / over a raised pictorial running horse in gold, with SABINE engraved below (the horse’s name). With its mixture of gold and silver, this was a spectacular award medal when new and contains quite a bit of gold. The owner evidently wore this with pride for many years, as can be seen by the wear on both the loop and the surfaces on each side, the wear making it difficult to read the owner’s name. A great item for any horse racing enthusiast! From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.
