Engraved Sheriff’s Badge Fashioned out of an 1893-Dated Barber Half Dollar. J.P. RANGER / DEP. SHERIFF / WOR. Co, MASS engraved on the reverse of the coin, the engraving filled with black enamel. Though we find James P. Ranger (1836-1910) online, no info about his role as a sheriff’s deputy in Worcester County, Massachusetts is available. The pin for the pin-back is missing, but could easily be repaired and the keeper ring is still attached. The coin is dished so that the engraved side bulges out. A very nice early badge sheriff’s badge! From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.
