Host coin Very Good.George Kunkel owned and ran theatres in the Washington, DC and Richmond, VA areas from 1821 to 1855, and at one time John Wilkes Booth was part of Kunkels thespian "stable" at the Jenny Lind Theatre in Richmond. George Kunkel moved to Baltimore in 1855 where he specialized in minstrel shows with the "Mr. Bones" routines and spirited music. He is famous for playing the role of Uncle Tom of Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin. He first appeared in this role in Charleston, South Carolina in 1861; afterwards Parson Brownlow published an editorial in his paper advising the troupe be driven out of the city. Though the troupe left the South, Kunkel continued to play the role elsewhere and in 1883 he performed through England under the management of Jarrett & Palmer. The last time he played Uncle Tom was in New Haven, Conn., during New Years week, 1885. He died suddenly at Baltimore, Md., January 25, 1885.
