C. M. BERRY / N. W. C. 5TH & / PHILA. / CHESNUT / SALOON on a 1774 Charles III Spanish Colonial 2 reales. Brunk B-594, Rulau PA-36. Good-4 (NGC).Casper M. Berry operated a saloon at the corner of Chestnut and Fifth Streets in Philadelphia, PA. However Berry owned a tavern prior to it that was located at 10th & Washington in the 1850 city directory and was located at NW 2nd & Washington in 1852. The establishment that is the subject of this stamp was first listed at that address in 1857 as a restaurant. Mostly found on 2 reales as here, and all were probably stamped in 1857 to commemorate the new location, as foreign coins such as 2 reales were demonetized in 1857. The last listing for the address is 1861 and by 1863 Berry was running a hotel at 106 S. 6th. A very popular counterstamp avidly pursued by collectors. From the Steve Tompkins Collection.
