ADMIT / TO / WOODS / MINSTRELS / 444 BDWAY / NY on a 1778-PTS-PR Bolivian 2 reales. Brunk W-796, Rulau NY-964B. Host coin Very Good.Managed by Henry Wood, Woods Minstrels, successor to Christy and Woods Minstrels, operated in the mid 1850s and offered "all elements of Ethiopian minstrelry" with shows consisting of "overtures, quick steps, choruses, quartettes, glees, duets, songs, ballads, extravaganzas" and many more listed entertainments. Tickets were 25 cents, so it was no mistake that their counterstamps were punched on equivalent 2 reales. Eventually after they moved to a new location, they began striking tokens for admission (see the next lot). Henry Wood retired in 1863 at the close of the season in December and sold all of his interest to a George Wood. From the Steve Tompkins Collection.
