Circa 1859 Sansom medal. Presidency Relinquished. U.S. Mint restrike. Musante GW-59, Baker-72A, Julian PR-1. Copper, Bronzed. SP-66 (PCGS).40.6 mm. 569.3 grains. Another example in this composition, but a slightly later die state. Uniform light mahogany bronze. In this state, the roughness on the rim remains, and light spalling has appeared on the portrait. The fields are also now reflective suggesting that the dies had some maintenance before this iteration was struck. In this respect, this piece is markedly different than the previous medal, but it was similarly struck a little later than the traditional “circa 1859” dating of these dies suggests. Most handsome and displaying just a trace of light handling.Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
