Circa 1859 Sansom medal. Presidency Relinquished. U.S. Mint restrike. Musante GW-59, Baker-72A, Julian PR-1. Copper, Bronzed. SP-64 (PCGS).41.3 mm. 497.7 grains. Beautiful mahogany bronze surfaces have taken on a slightly lighter chestnut patina on the highest points while traces of blue iridescence is seen in the fields. Slightly more satiny in texture than the highly reflective silver pieces, but almost completely free of handling marks and quite choice. Struck from a slightly later die state than seen on the above pieces, with a small patch of roughness on the obverse rim over NI of UNIT. No spalling is seen on the consistently satiny portrait. While the dies are circa 1859, this piece was probably struck a little later. Fine rim filing all around is evident, and is almost certainly from the final finishing of this medal at the mintEx William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
