Circa 1792 Twigg medal. Musante GW-38, Baker-65. White Metal. MS-64 (PCGS).35.6 mm. 256.0 grains. A stunning example of this very scarce issue. The obverse fields are immediately striking for the unusually bold reflectivity which nicely contrasts with the sharp and rather frosty devices. There are a few trivial hairlines in the fields, but the devices are nearly pristine. The reverse is also reflective, but less intensely so. Still, the remarkable uniformity and lack of impairment make for an incredibly satisfying specimen. Though not a great rarity, even the Chapmans thought this piece impressive enough to warrant plating in their 1882 sale of the Bushnell cabinet. It’s a wonder that Lorin Parmelee, who actually owned the Bushnell Collection at the time of the 1882 sale, didn’t pluck this one for himself.Ex Charles I. Bushnell, S.H. and H. Chapman, June 1882, lot 1281; William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
