St. Louis, Missouri. Bank of St. Louis. 18xx. $1. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64. Apparent. Hole Punch Cancelled, Hinge Remnants on Back.(MO-50 G70a). Another exquisitely produced ABNCo. proof on India paper that originated in the Newman Collection. It was obtained directly from D.C. Wismer (documented fully in several letters between the two) in 1939 along with many other superb Missouri proofs and notes which augmented his Green Collection Missouri notes purchased earlier considerably. Plate C proof from this series and a superb example with two back Wismer pedigree hinges noted as its grading fault as opposed to its pedigree significance. At the top center is the wide, classic Indian buffalo-hunting scene, originally engraved by Toppan, Carpenter & Co., above the red protector lathe work outlining FIVE in white. At the lower left is a young girls portrait, and at the lower right is a dog and safe motif. This type was branch location fill in type and is known for several branches. A few proofs are known to us, notably one that was in the Middendorf Collection. Having been in only two collections for 75 years or so has minimized the handling of this and we venture to say this is likely the finest known. Hole punch cancelled as made and with back hinges supporting the fascinating pedigree. This is the Kelly Plate Note with a catalog value of $5,000 assigned for a proof. Ex Newman Part VI where it $5,175 in April 2015.
