Portsmouth, New Hampshire. $5 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 467. The Rockingham NB. Charter #1025. PMG Very Good 10 Net. Restoration.A true New Hampshire rarity and from the incredibly popular southeastern town of Portsmouth. The Rockingham National Bank was one of five chartered banks in the town, second only to Manchester in that regard. The note is one of just six known with all being large-size as the bank was liquidated in 1905. Three of the total population are these always desirable 1882 $5 Brown Back designs. This Very Good note offers nice overall appeal for the technical grade, despite the well-executed restoration. Only two records of public sale are illustrated in Track and Price with this note being the last offered, selling for $1,495 in a June 2012 public sale. A significant Granite State offering on a well-known city.ppThe Rockingham National Bank of Portsmouth was chartered effective April 1, 1865, as the successor in interest to the state chartered Rockingham Bank. However, it was not until April 7 that authority was given for transferring the assets and liabilities the Rockingham (state) Bank, and it was not until the 17th that the institution went into operation. Years later, in 1925, an unrelated Rockingham National Bank would be chartered in Exeter, but for the present generation this was the only institution with this name.ppThe authorized capital of the new National Bank was limited to $400,000, but the directors settled upon $200,000 as the amount desired for operation, an amount quickly paid in. Shares had a par value of $50 each. As noted, the bank expired early in the 20th century.p
