South Pasadena, California. $5 1902 Plain Back. Friedberg 609 (W-781). The First NB. Charter #12797. PCGS Currency Very Choice New 64 PPQ.The First National Bank of South Pasadena was a short lived bank chartered in July 1925. By January of 1929 it was being liquidated after issuing just $185,940 worth of notes into circulation. The bank issued Series of 1902 $5 and $10 Plain Backs only. The present note is a beautifully original $5 Plain Back from this challenging Los Angeles County bank. Broad margins evenly frame the sharply inked plate impression. Stamped signatures of bank officers R. Clanton and Ed B. Murray are found along the bottom border of the design. The back displays bold overprint embossing that punches into the paper from the face. This is the finest note we have seen from this large size only bank. From Heritage Auctions sale of September 2006, lot 16311.
