One of the true Gems of the <em>Cleo Collection</em>, this 1861 $500 Montgomery note displays beautiful color and excellent paper quality for the type. The T-2 is one of the most popular notes in the Confederate series not only for its rarity but for their true artistic beauty as well. Ceres, the goddess of agriculture is seen in the lower left. The James Smillie engraved central vignette is titled <em>The Crossing</em> and features a steam locomotive with cars in tow crossing a bridge over a river with cattle watering themselves as a horsemen looks on. Bold green security and border prints are seen along with intricate die counters at top left and right. The penned signatures of actual Register Clitherall and actual Treasurer Elmore remain bold. The back features an elegant issuing manuscript from Assistant Confederate Treasurer A.J. Guirot who issued the note from New Orleans on June 22, 1861. The uncancelled paper is exceptionally cut with full frame lines and plenty of top and bottom margin present. A true anchor note to build a top notch type set around and one of the finest this cataloger has seen.
