1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 77-dd (i.e. old 78-dd), W-5535. Rarity-2 for die state. Horses Head Right, Running Fox Before Legend. VF-30 (PCGS).；145.8 grains. Die State 3, with the bold central "cocked die clash" from the denticles at the edge of a die at the central obverse, and the bold damage caused by a single object to both the obverse and the corresponding part of the reverse. This is the most common die state available of Maris 77-dd, and was for over 100 years known as Maris 78-dd, collected as a separate die variety by legions of collectors, including Dr. Shaw. This specimen is sharp, if lightly granular olive-brown, with no contact marks worthy of note beyond a very shallow grazing scrape at lower reverse. The eye appeal is quite positive on this piece that hailed from the extensive Sherr Collection that we auctioned in 1984.；From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection.
